Beto O'Rourke raises a whopping $38 million against Ted Cruz ahead of midterm elections  4 Months ago

Source:   USA Today

AUSTIN – Texas Democrat Beto O’Rourke raised $38.1 million in three months, a staggering fundraising total that sets a record for the most collected by any U.S. Senate candidate in a single fundraising quarter and rivals the high-dollar donations of some presidential candidates.

O’Rourke, who represents El Paso in Congress, is challenging U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz for his seat in the Senate.

His fundraising numbers, which the campaign released Friday, tripled Cruz's haul of $12 million during the same time period.

“It’s going to give us the resources we need to finish this campaign as strong as we possibly can and it’s more than three times the amount Ted Cruz raised, not just in his campaign, but all the affiliated political action committees that are contributing to his campaign,” O’Rourke said in a video posted to Twitter on Friday.

“We are doing something absolutely historic, not just ensuring that we have the resources to run and to win, but to make sure that our democracy once again is powered by people and only people,” he said.

O’Rourke’s $38.1 million came from 802,836 individual contributions made to his campaign between July and September.

The Democrat, who is fighting to unseat Cruz in a state that has not elected a Democrat in a statewide election since 1994, pledged not to accept money from political action committees or corporations when he launched his campaign.

The move was one that many political analysts believed would hurt his ability to raise enough money to compete in a state as large as Texas.

O'Rourke's latest haul brings his total fundraising since launching his campaign to about $61.7 million for the 2018 midterm elections. Cruz and his affiliated PACs have now raised about $29.5 million.

Both candidates are required to submit detailed information about their latest fundraising to the Federal Election Commission on Monday.

Polls have placed O’Rourke within single digits of Cruz in the state’s most closely watched race, one that has also piqued national interest.

O’Rourke has consistently outraised Cruz and has generated significant enthusiasm for his campaign, giving Democrats hope in a state that has not sent a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1988 or elected a statewide official from the party since 1994.

The race has been contentious, with a multitude of ads from both campaigns and outside groups looking to influence the outcome. The candidates met for a debate in Dallas in September and are scheduled to go face to face again on Tuesday in San Antonio.

Take a look at the quarterly hauls for both candidates since they entered the race. O'Rourke collects money through his primary Senate campaign and Cruz counts contributions from his Senate campaign and two affiliated PACs.
