Fearing law and order problem, state govt urges Centre to send Manipur VC on leave  4 Months ago

Source:   Times Of India

NEW DELHI: Apprehending deterioration of law and order situation, the Manipur government has written to the ministry of human resource development advising it to send the vice-chancellor of Manipur University on leave and set up an inquiry on the allegations levelled against him on Thursday.

The letter was written following a report of the state government on the situation in the campus. Teachers and postgraduate students of the university have been on a strike since May 31, 2018 demanding that the VC, Aditya Prasad Pandey, should resign immediately. The protesters are alleging dereliction of duty by Pandey as well as attempting to “saffronise” the university.

The students had submitted a charter of their demands to the university authorities, but when no actions were taken, they decided to go on a strike on May 30, 2018. A group of students also staged a protest on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Jantar Mantar in Delhi, demanding intervention of the MHRD.

The situation in the campus worsened as chairpersons of 28 departments and five deans put in their papers from their positions in their respective schools on Monday. The teachers’ association too alleged that VC takes leaves on arbitrary dates, without clarifying the date of his return causing delay in a lot of academic and administrative work.
